What Is Intramuros?
The name means within the walls in Latin. The city was founded in 1571 by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi and became the seat of Spanish colonial power in the Philippines for over three centuries. Today it is a UNESCO tentative heritage site and home to some of the most historically significant landmarks in Southeast Asia.
Key Landmarks to Visit
- Fort Santiago — The most important stop in Intramuros. This 16th-century citadel held national hero José Rizal in his final days before his execution. The Rizal Shrine inside the fort is deeply moving and historically essential.
- San Agustin Church — Manila’s oldest stone building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction was completed in 1607. The interior is breathtaking.
- Casa Manila — A museum that recreates domestic life in colonial Manila, with period furniture, artwork, and architecture authentically preserved.
- Manila Cathedral — The current structure is the eighth to stand on this site since 1571. It remains an active church and an architectural landmark.
How Long Should You Spend in Intramuros?
Plan for at least four hours to cover the main landmarks properly. A rushing visitor can see the exteriors of everything in two hours, but you will miss almost all of the context, history, and meaning that makes Intramuros remarkable.
